Emotional

Neutral

A neutral tone delivers information without coloring it positively or negatively. It's the texting equivalent of a flat affect — useful for logistics, business, and updates where emotion would be a distraction. Mistaken for cold or curt by readers expecting more warmth.

Examples

  • "Heading out at 6."
  • "The doctor's appointment is rescheduled to Thursday."
  • "Got it. I'll send the file tonight."

How to detect it

  • Short, factual sentences with no qualifiers or feeling words.
  • Absence of exclamation points, emojis, or warm sign-offs.
  • No questions or expressions of interest beyond the immediate logistics.

How to respond

  • Match neutral with neutral — adding warmth where there isn't any can feel performative.
  • If the brevity reads as cold to you, ask a clarifying question rather than assuming intent.
  • Save the warmth for the next message after the logistics are settled.
